About this event

The Center for Public History and UH Libraries invites you to the 100 Years of Stories library exhibit opening and the launch of Houston History magazine’s latest issue.

The UH Libraries exhibit, “Agents of Change: Celebrating Innovation at UH’s Centennial” is the culmination of the storytelling collaborative project between the Center for Public History, UH Libraries, and Houston Public Media, made possible through a gift from Carey C. Shuart.

Find out more about 100 Years of Stories here: https://uh.edu/class/ctr-public-history/projects/100-years-of-stories/about.php

Grounded in student research, the exhibit commemorates the spirit of innovation brought by UH students, faculty, administrators, and community members as they shaped the University of Houston into the trailblazing institution it is today. These agents of change have led UH on its journey from a junior college to a major, urban research university. Along the way, UH leaders expanded access to higher education and increased diversity, brought innovative approaches to learning, and created an institution that has had a strong impact on both local and global communities.

Discussing the exhibit and the complimentary articles in Houston History magazine, the event will feature a panel with UH alumni history makers and student researchers and history tellers:

Gene Locke: Houston lawyer and former City Attorney for Houston and Harris County Precinct One Commissioner, Locke was one of the first African American students when he arrived at UH in 1965. He became a prominent leader in the Afro-Americans for Black Liberation (AABL) student organization and graduated in 1969.

Graciela Saenz: Houston attorney & community activist, Saenz is the former Mayor Pro Tem and At-Large Council Member for City of Houston (1992-97). She is a UH alumna twice over – 1978 (B.A.) and 1986 (J.D.) – and former president of the UH Chicano Law Students Association

Grace Conroy: Conroy earned a B.A. in history from UH in the spring of 2022. She was a key researcher on the 100 Years of Stories project and is currently pursuing a master’s in public history at American University.

Panel moderated by Dr. Debbie Harwell, editor, Houston History magazine, instructional assistant professor in History and Honors.
