The Staff Council Community Outreach (Ad Hoc) Committee was launched November 2020 to strengthen our partnership with the Third Ward Initiative, a collaborative partnership with the Third Ward community, and to encourage and support a culture of volunteerism among staff. See below for more information on recently completed initiatives. Staff Council partnered with the University of Houston’s Third Ward Initiative to adopt a total of three families from Blackshear Elementary, Shape Community Center, and the family of our late UH staff member Mr. Renee Cantu who were in need. Eight UH staff members contributed a total of $255.00 to this initiative, which allowed us to purchase three $85.00 HEB gift cards and provide holiday gifts, to the Mason, London, and Cantu families and their children.

Staff Council partnered with the Houston Texans YMCA to provide a Thanksgiving meal, including turkey, cornbread dressing, green beans, yams, and a mini bunt cake, to seniors who did not have family in the Houston area. Thanks to the generosity of 60 UH staff members, the UH Staff Council Thanksgiving Meal Initiative for Senior Citizens raised $1,809.57 and provided 172 meals to senior citizens who are residents of Greater Third Ward.  Seniors who were able to drive had the option to pick up the meal on Wednesday before Thanksgiving at the Houston Texans YMCA. Seniors who were unable to drive had their meals delivered to them.

The 2020 Staff Council Sock & Blanket Drive benefited the Star of Hope Mission. The drive took place at UH Technology Bridge from Monday, December 14, 2020, through Thursday, December 17, 2020. This year's drive was by no-contact delivery allowing Staff Council volunteers to safely receive donated items by removing them from the trunk of vehicles.

60 bags and boxes of new and clean, gently used items were donated to the Star of Hope Mission this year.
