Dear Coog,

Welcome to another great semester at the University of Houston! We hope your fall classes have started well, despite the disruption from Hurricane Laura. With the stress and anxiety that can come with dealing with a natural disaster — combined with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic — we want to emphasize that we are ready to help you with your physical and emotional health and well-being.

The Division of Student Affairs and Enrollment Services has several departments dedicated entirely to helping you stay active, healthy, engaged and motivated. If you are struggling with current events or have school-related anxiety, we can help you.

The University’s Student Health Center offers a number of convenient services for students, including general medicine offered on campus by appointment — including via telemedicine and telepsychiatry — as well as an on-campus pharmacy.

They also provide COVID-19 testing for students, faculty and staff who become symptomatic or have been identified as someone exposed while on the UH campus. This testing is for those who have attended a face-to-face course, or have been living or working on campus. Flu vaccinations are especially important this year and will be available by appointment at the health center and at a variety of onsite HEB-sponsored clinics.

Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) will continue to serve the UH community via teletherapy (both phone and video), and is now also offering in-person appointments under limited conditions. CAPS also offers the convenience of Let’s Talk, which provides informal confidential consultations for any member of the UH community. The popular Coogs Conquer (C-2) workshop series is free to all students, covering a variety of topics such as managing mindfulness, racial trauma, and importantly, a “return to campus” series that will share ways to engage successfully both emotionally and academically this fall.

UH Wellness supports you in your health and well-being needs, with tips on how to stay safe, how to take care of yourself, and keeping yourself engaged socially. It also operates Cougar Cupboard if you find yourself struggling with food insecurity. Finally, CoogsCare can help you are facing an emergency hardship and need assistance with food, finances, transportation or housing, among other crises that may affect your academic pursuits.

It is important that you take care of yourself, but if you need help, we are here. Please reach out if you are struggling. Your health and safety is our utmost priority.

As we continue with what we hope will be an amazing fall semester, please wear your face coverings when on campus and be safe wherever you are, and we can all be Coog Strong this year.

Sincerely,
