Xiaonan Shan, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering, in collaboration with other researchers, has developed a new battery anode using seawater that overcomes the limitations of lithium-ion batteries. The discovery offers promise for energy storage and other applications, including electric vehicles. 
 

A clinical trial led by Jose Luis Contreras-Vidal, director of the Non-Invasive Brain Machine Interface Systems Laboratory at UH, found that stroke survivors gained clinically significant arm movement and control by using an external robotic device powered by the patients’ own brains

He was recognized for his extraordinary contributions to the advancement of translational infectious disease research and pharmacy education.

Engineering Societies Recognize Hsu for Distinguished Achievement
Thomas T.C. Hsu, Moores Professor of Civil Engineering, received the 2020 Distinguished Achievement Award from the Society of Earthquake Engineering of the Republic of China, Taiwan, and the Structural Engineering Society of the Republic of China, Taiwan. He was honored for his nearly 60 years of research in mechanical performance of reinforced concrete structures.

UT-Austin Keeping Most Classes Virtual Through January as Coronavirus Infections Soar in Travis County
The University of Texas at Austin is shifting more spring semester classes completely online through the end of January as COVID-19 cases continue to ravage the city and state. According to an email sent to students Friday, all classes that are split between in-person and online will be completely online through the end of the month.

Free COVID Dashboard Resources Offer Templates for College and County Data
A project dedicated to sharing best practices in COVID-19 data visualization is offering free resources to help colleges and universities create their own dashboards for disseminating public health information to students, parents, faculty and staff. The initiative, dubbed We Rate COVID Dashboards, is a joint effort by Yale University faculty and public health experts across several higher education institutions.
