HR Health and Wellness August 2019

GET READY TO POWER UP!

Join colleagues and friends for a little exercise and fun in the sun by participating in the Hess Houston Corporate 5K, Oct. 22-24, in Memorial Park. The best part about the Corp 5K is that participants can run or WALK it (40 percent of people walk) and go at their own pace.

This year, Tuesday, Oct. 22, will be UH DAY AT THE CORP 5K! Wear Cougar Red and join colleagues and friends at 4 p.m. near the registration tent to meet and socialize prior to heading out for the run/walk!

The entry fee for UH employees is $40.  However, thanks to a partnership with Transwestern, POWER UP Employee Wellness will cover 50 percent of the registration fee for the first 75 employees who sign up! So REGISTER TODAY!

  • Go online to register and select Tuesday, Oct. 22 (UH Day at the Corp 5K) or choose the date that works best. No codes are needed as the $20 discount is already built into the link.
  • Organize a group in your department to participate today! Invite  family and friends to join.

All UH team members will receive a free T-shirt, entry into a prize drawing, and free food and libations in the post-race celebration tent!  Questions? Contact POWERUP@uh.edu

TEXFLEX: USE IT OR LOSE IT!

The end of the plan year is rapidly approaching, so don’t forget about your TexFlex flexible spending account!  If you don’t use the funds in your flexible spending account (FSA) by year-end, the funds will be forfeited.

  • Your expenses must be dated by Aug. 31, 2019 to qualify for reimbursement.
  • The last day to submit claims for 2019 plan year expenses is Dec. 31, 2019.

For 2019, these pre-tax dollars can be used for a variety of health-related expenses including prescription drugs and insulin, as well as certain medical, dental, vision and professional service expenses.  Don’t forget that you can also use your FSA for over-the-counter health care items. Review the complete list of eligible expenses.

To check your account balance, log in to Texflex Spending Accounts or contact them via phone.

STRETCH INTO FALL WITH FREE YOGA

A free beginner’s yoga class will be offered for faculty and staff throughout the fall semester! Beginning Wednesday, Aug. 14, the class will be held every Wednesday afternoon, 5:30-6:30 p.m., in the Health 2 Building, Room 2216.  The sessions will be led by UH’s Nancy Sanger, a certified yoga instructor. No experience is necessary to participate. Participants in the "drop-in" class are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing, bring their own yoga mat (or towel) and to come with an open mind ready to de-stress and relax. Please read, print and bring the participation waiver  to your first session.

The class will be held on the second floor just past the Cougar Grounds coffee shop.  Room 2216 is most easily accessed via the Calhoun Road entrance of Health 2 by taking the stairs to the second floor or via the skybridge from the Health 1 Building.

ATTEND A WELLNESS SEMINAR

This fall, attend one or more POWER UP Lunch and Learn wellbeing seminars.  Designed to focus on topics that relate to the nine dimensions of wellness, the series promotes a holistic approach to health and well-being, and helps attendees identify things they can do to support their healthy lifestyle goals.

Presentations this fall include sessions on sleep, nutrition and stress, among others.  The free workshops occur once a month on campus and at the UH Technology Bridge, noon-1 p.m. You are asked to register in advance.  To do so, and view a full listing of the fall 2019 topics, please click here.

REGISTER FOR ONSITE MOBILE MAMMOGRAM

Thanks to our partnership with The Rose, we are able to provide 3D/2D mammogram screenings to eligible UH employees with BCBSTX HealthSelect insurance (or other accepted insurance) with no co-pay or additional out-of-pocket expense. Screenings will be held on campus Oct. 15-16 beginning at 9 a.m. both days. Provided by The Rose, screenings will be conducted in their state-of-the-art mobile unit.

Register online and use code UH beginning today- Oct. 13.  If you have difficulty making an appointment or would like more information, please contact The Rose at MobileTeam@therose.org or call 281-464-5136.

DRINK MORE WATER

Beat the heat this summer with H2O!  Keep yourself hydrated and refreshed by refilling your reusable water bottle at one of the 65 UH2O filling stations across campus.

Originally launched in 2013 by Facilities Services, the UH2O stations are a vital part of the University's commitment to sustainability and to reduce the number of plastic water bottles that end up in landfills.

GET YOUR YEARLY PHYSICAL

An annual routine physical exam is important for maintaining good health while also identifying any potential health risks. To support your health and well-being, the University established UH policy MAPP 02 .02 .0 8, the Fitness Release Time and Wellness Leave policy. The policy introduced wellness leave, which rewards eligible employees with eight hours of time off that can be used as two half days or one full day off.  The ability to earn and use wellness leave for 2019 concludes Dec. 20. Once awarded, the time must be used within the current calendar year.

To qualify for the reward, you must:

  • Take a routine physical exam
  • Complete an approved health risk assessment
