HR Health and Wellness January 2020

HAPPY NEW YEAR from Power UP!

Make this year a year of health and wellbeing by taking advantage of one or more of the following wellness opportunities!

Get moving this spring

This spring take advantage of the University’s Fitness Release Time (FRT) & Wellness Leave policy. The FRT portion of the policy provides full-time, benefits-eligible employees who have been with the University a minimum of three months from date of hire up to thirty (30) minutes, three times per week, to participate in physical fitness activities on campus.  The policy, MAPP 02.02.08, has been established to support UH employees in their efforts to improve their health and well-being, as well as enhance their work performance and productivity.  Apply for and use FRT to explore the campus by walking the Cougar Walking Paths.  You can also participate in free ZUMBA, Tuesdays & Thursdays, 5:30-6:30PM, Alumni Center Volleyball Courts or free faculty/staff YOGA every Monday & Wednesday, 12:15-1:00PM, at the UHTB, Bldg 3, Multipurpose Room, or Tuesdays & Thursdays, 11:00-11:45AM, in the CRWC, Wellness CLassroom.  Free Classes begin Jan. 13.  Look for more physical fitness opportunities to be announced soon!  This spring get up from your desk and get your move on!  Learn all about the FRT policy and how to apply here!

wellness leave - claim your reward

A major component of a healthy lifestyle is engaging in preventive care.  The Wellness Leave portion of the FRT & Wellness Leave policy provides employees 8 hours of wellness leave for obtaining a yearly physical exam and completing an online health assessment (HA).  Comprehensive physical exams help identify certain risk factors for disease, so that your doctor can help you keep them under control and you healthy.  Additionally, the personalized HA helps you understand how to improve and maintain your health.  Once an employee completes both requirements, UH rewards them for doing so with 8 hours of wellness leave to use however they choose.  Full-time, benefits-eligible employees who have been with the University a minimum of three months from date of hire are eligible.  Wellness leave is awarded once a year and must be taken within the current calendar year. To maximize your ability to use the leave before the end of the year, it is advised that you complete the requirements prior to the fall.  To learn more and take advantage of this employee benefit, click here.

if not now, when?

New Year, new beginnings … another opportunity to quit smoking! The Latino and Behavioral Health Research Team invites Latinx adults who smoke to take part in a wellness program research study. The study includes two main components: a wellness program and assessments. The wellness program consists of 8 health counseling sessions (1 in person and 7 by phone) within a 3-month period and the provision of nicotine patches or lozenges. There are also three assessments in person along with the completion of online surveys. Participation is strictly confidential! If you or someone you know may be eligible and interested in participating or getting more information, please call the research team at 713.743.7301 or email labhrt@central.uh.edu. For additional information and to complete an online screener, click here.  This project is sponsored by the American Cancer Society and directed by Dr. Virmarie Correa-Fernández, Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychological, Health and Learning Sciences.
