Dear Research Faculty,

Last Friday, Harris County Judge Hidalgo announced that the Harris County Threat Level was upgraded to Severe Level 1: Stay Home. The County is asking its residents to stay home except for essential needs, avoid and cancel all gatherings of any size with people outside of your household, and avoid non-essential personal travel. With the Fourth of July weekend approaching, please follow the guidelines.

Funding Opportunities

President Khator announced $1 million to provide research grants to faculty to conduct research in two areas, race relations and COVID-19. Details are on our Internal Awards page. Full-time tenured or tenure-track faculty and non-tenure track research and clinical faculty are eligible to apply for these funds. Individual faculty members or groups of faculty may apply. If you have start-up funding, you must provide additional justifications for the request. Instructional faculty are not eligible to apply. External participants, including community organizations, are encouraged. A faculty member may serve as PI on only one application and as co-PI on one application.

The CHEST Foundation has issued a request for proposals for one-year grants (up to $25,000) to address clinical (hospital or outpatient) or community-related aspects of COVID-19. The deadline is Friday, July 17. Special considerations will be given to applicants in the early stages of their careers. As the charitable foundation for the American College of Chest Physicians, the CHEST Foundation has a mission of championing lung health by supporting clinical research, patient education and community service.

Due to COVID-19 disruptions, the NSF extended the deadline of the Faculty Early Career Development Program (CAREER) to Tuesday, August 11, from the original July 27 deadline. In order to ensure timely proposal review and decision making, NSF strongly encourages submission of CAREER proposals on or before the original deadline of July 27. NSF will not consider requests to extend the deadline date beyond 5 p.m., submitter’s local time on August 11.

Harris County Threat Level 1: University Operation

With Harris County’s Threat Level being at its highest, you may be asking what this means for the University. The University is currently operating in Phase 2 of its reopening plan, where faculty and staff are allowed to return to campus on a voluntary basis. Harris County is asking its residents to follow the guidelines I mentioned earlier to limit the spread of the coronavirus; therefore, the University is asking you to follow President Khator’s request in her June 2 email to the campus community that if you can perform your work remotely, please continue to do so. If we need to impose further restrictions on human subjects research due to the increased risk of transmission, we will inform you immediately.

VPR Virtual Office Hours

The next VPR Virtual Office Hours will be on Friday, July 10, at noon (please note the time). You will be able to access the event through the Research & Innovation Teams site. I hope you will be able to join us next week.

Best regards,
